Research Title
Integrated Coal Gasification and natural gas reforming for energy efficient polygeneration plants.

Research Objectives
Conventional entrained flow gasifiers (GE-Texaco) employ radiant syngas cooler to cool the hot coal-derived syngas generating steam in the process. The goal of our project is to investigate a better method to cool the hot coal-derived syngas and increase the overall efficiency at the same time. Previous work has shown promise in using the endothermic steam reforming reaction to cool the hot coal-derived syngas and produce a more valuable product, hydrogen rich syngas. The goal of the project is to develop a dynamic two dimensional, heterogeneous model of the system which would help design the new device. The dynamic model would help us understand the dynamics of such a system during start-up/shutdown conditions and would aid in designing a control strategy for the same.
