Research Title
Dynamic Optimization of Basic Oxygen Furnace (BOF)

Research Objectives
Most of the steel industries in the world use a Basic Oxygen Furnace (BOF) to remove carbon from molten iron. One of the main challenges in this process is to determine the necessary process conditions to achieve the desired end carbon content. In that line, a lot of money and time is lost due to over-processing and reprocessing. Therefore, a model that can be used to define the best set of process conditions that minimizes cost while meeting the required end temperature and carbon content would significantly improve the BOF furnace operation. The objective of this research is to develop an optimization model for the BOF furnace, and then use it to define the best set of operations conditions to obtain a product within the required specifications and at the lowest possible cost.
